Chapter Twenty-Two

Brandon

How about you marry her and claim her once and for all?

Ignoring him, I don’t hesitate to answer Macy instead.

“Absolutely.” I think it would be best if we take it slow. We still know nothing about one another. I don’t want us to dive headfirst into being mates only to have our foundation crumble. “And we’ll start by me taking you out tonight.” Then a thought occurs to me. “That is … if you’re not married?”

Holy, how am I this nervous?

“Tonight?” Picking up her hand, I ignore her rigid posture and proceed to take my girls up to the house, where Miranda is going to make it up to my mom … her grandma.

Holy shit.

Your mother is going to freak.

Ideas of where I could take Macy fill my head and nearly steal all my attention on our walk back up to the house.

The movies?

No, can’t talk there.

A nice dinner?

Yeah, right. I can’t cook or afford the nice places in Fetterman that are date-worthy.

How about you come up with something original?

“We’ve wasted too much time as it is, especially with me running away yesterday. Do you honestly think I’m going to waste another moment?” As I beam down at her, desire for her pulsates through me when her own crosses her face.

She’s so easy to read.

Good.

“I … Well, no, but what makes you think I don’t work tonight as well?” She pushes some hair behind her ear. “And no, I’m not married.”

Relief fills me with so much joy. It’s taking everything within me to remain where I’m standing.

“I don’t, so you’ll have to tell me.” I hear a four-wheeler pull up somewhere close to the house. It’s either my dad or Tristan. Part of me really hopes it’s my brother so I can watch my mom and Macy rip him a new one.

“Momma works every other night,” Miranda blurts out. She’s still staring at me. I didn’t think I was the most interesting person around, but this little girl certainly thinks I am.

It’s because you’re her father.

The freak-out I had when Goose knocked me down suddenly comes back to my mind. Glancing at the little girl in my arms from the corner of my eyes, I can barely remember most of it. I’ve had issues with adjusting since the last mission three months ago.

Every time I went off on an assignment and came back after taking out a target, I felt a piece of me slip into darkness. While other guys were able to laugh and enjoy their downtime afterward, including talking to their mates, I lost my ability to smile. My carefree nature vanished no matter how much Carter and the others tried to help preserve it.

Waking this morning may have pushed me back into hell, but it now feels like something has woken me that has been slumbering for far too long. Seeing Miranda pulled on something deep in the depths of my darkened soul, even in the turmoil she was inflicting on not only the chickens but my mom and me as well.
